Q. Where is S-Rank Chicken Located?
A. We are in unit #11 at 57 Glen Cameron Road in Thornhill. Please make sure to enter from the door at the east side of the building (the left side of the building when facing it), not the front entrance!
Q. What are your regular operating hours?
A. We are open every day from 11:00 to 20:00.
Q. What type of oil is used for frying at S-Rank Chicken?
A. Both our Korean fried chicken and our hand-cut fries are fried in peanut oil for maximum crispiness and flavour. We do not settle for low grade seed oils like canola (rapeseed) oil or vegetable oil.
Q. Are there any peanuts or peanut products in your kitchen?
A. Yes, our food is deep fried in peanut oil. We do not settle for low grade seed oils like canola (rapeseed) oil or vegetable oil.
Q. Why is S-Rank Chicken so much tastier than other shops?
A. There are 4 fundamental reasons why other shops cannot compete on taste; Firstly, we use a very finely tuned family recipe and are very particular about the precision of ratios and measurements for maximum consistency; it's why our kitchen is full of measuring scales. Secondly, we are the only local shop willing to fry our chicken with peanut oil which is triple the cost of low grade seed oils like canola (rapeseed) oil or vegetable oil. Thirdly, we are the only local shop which uses a far superior double fry process at 2 different temperatures with a resting period in between. Other shops, which aim to churn customers rapidly, cannot afford to do a double fry as it adds time and complexity. Finally, we are one of the few shops which does not use frozen, pre-cooked food.
Q. Why is S-Rank Chicken so much more affordable than neighbouring Korean Fried Chicken shops?
A. We don't have to pay expensive franchise fees, advertising fees, or ingredient import fees to some overseas brand and we chose an inexpensive, but accessible location which means we don't pay as much towards rent. This allows our chicken to meet an unmatchable price far lower than other shops while delivering a superior taste.
Q. What should I order if I want to order "one whole chicken" (한마리)?
A. That depends on if you're talking about standard South Korean fryer chickens (similar in size to a Cornish game hen) or one of the many hybrid lines of North American fryer chickens.
South Korean fryer chickens:
Live weight: ~1 kg
Dressed/raw weight: ~775 g
Edible meat/fat/skin portion: ~525 g
Our closest equivalent: 600 g of boneless skinless chicken leg meat (raw weight before cooking)
North American fryer chickens:
Live weight: ~1.9 kg
Dressed/raw weight: ~1.5 kg
Edible meat/fat/skin portion: ~1 kg
Our closest equivalent: 1 kg of boneless skinless chicken leg meat (raw weight before cooking)
If you want the equivalent of a whole Korean chicken, we recommend our boneless 600 g size and if you want a whole North American chicken, we recommend our boneless 1 kg size.
Q. Is your food frozen?
A. Only our ice cream is! We don't use frozen, pre-cooked food as it ruins the texture and flavour of the chicken and fries.
Q. What sauce do you recommend?
A. Yangnyeom is the most classic and popular Korean fried chicken sauce. It is also available in a spicy option.
Q. Do you accept cash?
A. We very strongly prefer card payments. However, we can accept cash. Just note that we do not carry any spare change.
Q. Can I place an order 1 minute before you close?
A. Our closing time is actually a "last order" time. So, absolutely yes. Please feel free to do so! Please understand that we are happy to take your order, but be prepared to wait a long time as evenings are quite busy. You can always schedule your order several hours ahead on our website.
Q. Are your chicken and cheese curds Halal?
A. Yes! We purchase our chicken from a halal distributor and every box arrives stamped with the HMA (Halal Monitoring Authority) seal. Our cheese curds are imported from a small village near Ottawa and they are also Halal certified.
Q. Do you allow service animals?
A. Yes, we welcome people with disabilities who are accompanied by a service animal.
Q. Do you offer anything for birthdays?
A. Yes! If you present your ID to us on your birthday, we will gift you a beverage with your purchase.
Q. Can I make a special request with my order?
A. You may make requests with your order, we have a "Special Instructions" section on our order page for this purpose. However, we cannot guarantee that these requests will be fulfilled. We will try our best to meet your requests. However, please understand that this is a kitchen run entirely by 1 person. We may not have the luxury of fulfilling supplemental requests when the kitchen is busy. For the highest likelihood of requests being met, we strongly advise ordering several hours ahead using the "schedule an order" function on our order page.
Q. Do I need to pay a tip?
A. Absolutely not! We are a non-tipping establishment. We expect customers to accurately place orders by themselves (preferably online, well ahead of time) and pick up their food without any expectation of paying a tip.
Q. Do you take phone orders?
A. This is a non-tipping establishment operated by 1 person at a time, so we cannot be inputting phone orders (which often end up incorrect due to miscommunications or unclear signals) while simultaneously juggling, at times, 6+ large orders for other customers. So, no phone orders. Please accurately and preemptively place your order on our website well ahead of time (ideally scheduled in advance) for the best experience.
